Redcoats win game 1!

 

     What turned out to be a pitcher’s duel went in to an extra innings with Pittsburg scoring the deciding run.

     Pittsburg scored early off Newhouser in the first inning due to a triple by Wyrostek, and the second inning with a double by Mueller.

     Guadalcanal was held off from making any runs until the seventh inning when Galan knocked in two runs with a double down the third base line to tie the game.

     The teams stayed scoreless until the 10 inning when Schoendienst lined a single to shallow right with the bases loaded and two outs.

     Caldwell pitched his second scoreless inning and closed the game out for the Redcoats.

Coastwatchers come back in game 2! Series Tied 1-1.

 

     A tight game for hitters was eventually turned over to the relief staffs of both teams going into the final innings. The Coastwatchers were able to hold off Pittsburg final inning attack to win the game.

     The Coastwatchers scored first in the second inning driving in four runs lead off by Ennis’s double down the third base line. Then with two outs Harris lined a shot to left that was misplayed by Kiner and allowed Harris to second and Ennis to score. A crucial error that lead to a four run inning. Edwards in right field followed with a throwing error to home off of Stanky’s single to right.

     The top of the third Pittsburg came back with three runs when Kiner hit a double to left center with the bases loaded sending in everyone with two outs.

     In the eighth inning the Redcoats scored another rally with Kiner hitting a 2 run homer and doubles by Scoendienst and Mueller making taking the lead 6-5.

     The Coastwatchers rallied back in the bottom of the eighth with four runs after a succession of singles top off by Ennis’s double down the left field line. This put Guadalcanal up by 2 going into the ninth.

     The ninth inning saw four Coastwatcher pitchers battle to maintain their lead and close out the game. With two outs and the bases loaded Pittsburg decided to send in the lefty Rowell to bat for Kiner.  Guadalcanal responded sending in their lefty Zoldak to face Rowell. Rowell struck out ending the Pittsburg rally.

Strong pitching puts Guadalcanal ahead in the series 2-1!

 

     In a tight game that went down to the wire the Coastwatchers were able to pull ahead in the series, 2 games to 1. Kramer pitched 7 solid innings only allowing 7 hits and one run. The Redcoats pitcher Burkhart held the Coastwatchers to 10 hits and 2 runs in 6 innings.

     The Coastwatchers scored in the first inning through a fielder’s choice play. They were able to score again in the fourth inning on an rbi single by Walker to put them up 2-0.

     Pittsburg answered in the bottom of the fourth when Kiner hit a solo home run to deep left.

     The Coast watchers made it 3-1 in the eighth inning as pinch hitter Philley lined a double to right center. He scored on a single by Walker. They were able to add insurance runs in the ninth when Ennis doubled to deep left center sending in Galan. Ennis then scored on Stanky’s single to right center. Erickson was brought in to pitch the bottom of the ninth and closed the out the game.

Redcoats get strong pitching to tie the series at 2!

 

          Redcoat’s pitcher Ostermueller fell two outs short of a complete game as Caldwell was needed to close out the ninth. Ostermueller pitched 8 scorless innings with 5 hits going into the ninth.

     The game saw 3 scoreless inning go by before the Redcoats were able to go on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Kiner had an rbi single sending in Wyrostek for the first run and Culberson gained the 2nd rbi on a weak grounder to third that was thrown home in attempt to get the advancing Edwards.

     Pittsburg scored again in the bottom of the 6th as Kiner lined a double to left center. Mueller followed with a double to right center scoring Kiner. Ostermueller then singled to right center sending in Mueller. They scored again in the 7th with York’s double to left center making it 5-0.

     Guadalcanal made their final attempt to salvage the game in the ninth. A single and a pair of walks loaded the bases with one out and Masi coming to bat. Masi picked up an rbi with a walk bringing Fleming up to bat with the bases loaded. Fleming uncorked a double to deep left center driving in 2 more runs and leaving 2nd and 3rd occupied with one out. Caldwell came on in relief and struck out Stanky and lined Schultz to second for the final out.

Coastwatchers rally in the 9th to take a 3-2 series lead!

 

     Pittsburg’s Higbe pitched 6 scoreless innings scattering four hits before giving it all away in the last two innings. Pittsburg brought in Caldwell in the ninth with no outs and the bases loaded but he was not up to the task of stopping a Coastwatcher onslaught.

     Pittsburg score one in the 1st inning on an rbi single that sent Pesky in from second. The Redcoats scored in the 6th on a fielder’s choice grounder and another run on a  dropped fly ball to Dimaggio. And in the seventh inning they added 2 more runs on a single by Thomson sending Wyrostek and York home. The score after 7 innings was 5-0 Redcoats.

     The Coastwatchers scored in the 8th with the bases loaded and 2 outs when Higbe threw a wild pitch advancing the runners. He then struck out Becker for the last out.

     With a 5-1 lead going in to the 9th Gaudalcanal was not about to lay down. Stanky led off with a walk and Fleming grounded a single up the middle. Galan then lined a double to right center sending in Stanky. With a 5-2 lead the Redcoats brought in Caldwell. Walker followed with a single to right sending in Fleming making it 5-3. Dimaggio then grounded a single up the middle making it 5-4 with one out. Hatton then sent a double into left center driving in Walker and Dimaggio taking the lead 6-5. The Coastwatcher’s  final run scored on an infield hit by Stanky.

     In the bottom of the ninth the Redcoats needed 3 runs to win the game. Thompson was brought in for the Coastwatchers. York started out with a walk. Rowell then grounded into a double play to short. With one out left Thomson was brought in and he walked. Mueller then doubled to right center sending Thomson to third with Schoendienst coming up. Schoendienst walked loading the bases bringin the pitcher Caldwell up to bat. Pittsburg sent up Richmond to pinch hit and he was thrown out on a grounder to short to end the game.

Coastwatchers win!

 

     The Coastwatchers Harris pitched 8 innings scattering 5 hits and allowing 1 earned run in clinching Guadalcanal’s World Series victory. Lanier was brought in in the 9th to earn the save and close out the final Redcoat rally of the season.

     The Coastwatchers scored 2 runs in the 3rd on a couple of rbi singles by Becker and Dimaggio. They followed that up with another 3 runs in the 6th as Galan doubled to right center and scored on Harris’s single to right. Masi then picked up an rbi sending Galan in on a single to left. Becker then grounded a double down the 3rd base line scoring Masi. This put the Coastwatchers ahead 5-0.

     Pittsburg came back to score one in the 7th on a fielder’s choice to make it 5-1.

     The Coastwatcher’s then added their final run of the season on a home run by Walker to deep right.

     The last Redcoat runs came in the 9th as they fought to stay alive. They lead the inning of with Kiner who belted his third World Series homer deep down the left field line making it 6-2. Schoendienst then walked followed by Mueller who doubled to left center. The Coastwatchers brought in Lanier and after 2 sac flies and a ground out, earned the save and secured the World Series Championship title for the Guadalcanal Coastwatchers.
