1984 All-Star Game (3rd Annual)

The third annual BDSL all-star game will long be remembered for...well, not much. The Walter Johnson's got off to a good start - Willie Upshaw booted Lou Whitaker's grounder to start the game, and he would later come home when Eddie Murray lined a single to right off of Joaquin Andujar. Jim Beattie kept the Ruth squad in check for the first two innings, but the Ruthians struck for a run in the third when Ryne Sandberg singled home Jose Cruz, who had led-off the inning with a pinch-hit double of Juan Berenguer. Berenguer's troubles continued in the fourth, when he allowed a single to Willie Upshaw, who went to second on a Bob Brenly ground out and came around Al Oliver's single to left. Manger David Peng brought in Craig Lefferts to face Wade Boggs, but Boggs delivered a basehit up the middle. Jose Cruz flied to center, setting the stage for MVP Ryne Sandberg, who doubled home two runs, Boggs just beating Jeff Leonard's throw to the plate. Dwight Evans capped the rally with an rbi single to center, and the fourth ended with Ruth up 5-1. And it stayed that way...and stayed that way to the end. The closest either side got to a rally was the 6th inning, when Walter Johnson put runners at first and second before Dave Righetti got Alvin Davis to hit into a 6-4-3 double play. Al Nipper got the win for his inning of relief work, while Berenguer got the loss.
