September 1983

 

 

·         We have updated our records & streaks pages and now have a link to them from the BDSL homepage. Here are some notable events that occurred in September: click here for more details            

        • Joe Niekro of North Hollywood tied a record by giving up 5 homeruns in a game.
        • There was another 1-hitter during September the 11th in league history:
          • Pascual Perez of Palm Beach.
        • The London Rippers tied a record with 8 doubles in a game.
        • The Milton Mavericks tied a record with 13 walks in a game.
        • Consecutive Game Streaks has now been updated:
          • Mike Scott of London continues his record streak which is now at 17 straight losses and the streak is still active going into 1984.
          • Peter Ladd of Sleepytown upped his record with 28 consecutive saves. The streak is still active going into 1984.
          • The Columbia Senators lost a record 20 games in September.
          • Also, several players had active streaks going into 1984:
            • Eddie Murray of Savannah has a 19 game hit streak going into 1984. The current record is 32 held by Dave Concepcion.
            • Larry McWilliams of LaGrange has a 10 game win streak going into 1984. The current record is 13 held by Joaquin Andujar.

 

 

 

August 1983

        • Willie McGee of Barnett Shale tied a record with 6 hits in a game.
        • Darryl Strawberry of North Hollywood set a new record with 9 RBI in a game.
        • Kevin Gross of London set a new record by allowing 5 homeruns in a game, amazingly in only 4.2 innings.
        • Lamarr Hoyt of New York City tied a record by facing only 28 batters in a complete game.
        • There were two 1-hitters in August, the 9th & 10th in league history:
          • Lamarr Hoyt of New York City
          • Ron Guidry of Decatur
        • The Sleepytown Dukes tied a record with 6 homeruns in a game.
        • The Columbia Senators set a record with 8 stolen bases in a game.
        • Consecutive Game Streaks has now been updated:
          • Al Wiggins of Milton tied a record by stealing a base in 6 consecutive games.
          • Jim Rice of New York City tied a record for the 2nd time by hitting a homerun in 3 consecutive games.
          • Mike Scott of London record streak of 15 straight losses held in August and the streak is still active going into September.
          • Peter Ladd of Sleepytown upped his record with 24 consecutive saves. The streak is still active going into September.

 

July 1983

 

·         Willie McGee of Barnett Shale became the 6th player to HIT for the CYCLE!

        • Doug DeCinces of Savannah tied a record with 8 RBI in a game.
        • John Stuper of North Hollywood set a new record by throwing 173 pitches in a game.
        • Mike Flanagen of Thunder Bay set a new record by retiring 25 consecutive batters in a game.
        • Ron Davis of London tied a record by striking out 6 consecutive batters in a game.
        • The Sleepytown Dukes tied a record by walking 13 times in a game.
        • The Charlotte Rays set a record by coming from 8 runs down to win a game.
        • Consecutive Game Streaks has now been updated:
          • Al Wiggins of Milton set a record by scoring a run in 11 consecutive games.
          • Rudy Law of North Hollywood set a record by stealing a base in 6 consecutive games.
          • Mike Scott of London continues to set records with 15 straight losses. The streak is still active going into August.
          • Peter Ladd of Sleepytown set a new record with 19 consecutive saves. The streak is still active going into August.
          • Jim Rice of New York City tied a record by hitting a homerun in 3 consecutive games.

 

June 1983

 

·         George Brett of London became the 5th player to HIT for the CYCLE!

        • Wade Boggs of New York City ties a record with 5 walks in a game.
        • Nolan Ryan of Vegas retired the 1st 22 Oregon hitters in a row establishing a new record.
        • Mario Soto of Charleston tossed the 8th 1-hitter in BDSL history. Soto has thrown three of eight 1-hitters.
        • The Milton Mavericks set a record by hitting 5 triples in a game.
        • The Wellington Knights and Columbia Senators both stole 7 bases in a game establishing a new record.
        • The London Rippers set a record with 7 errors in a game.
        • The Milton Mavericks set a record by coming from 7 runs down to win a game.
        • The Sleepytown Dukes tied a record with 3 consecutive homeruns in a game.
        • Consecutive Game Streaks has now been updated:
          • Mike Schmidt of Oregon tied a record by scoring a run in 9 consecutive games. The streak is still active so he could set a new mark in July.
          • Dan Driessen of Charleston tied a record by reaching base 11 consecutive times.
          • Mike Scott of London set a new record with 10 straight losses. The streak is still active going into July.

 

May 1983

 

·         Ken Landreaux of Toronto and Al Bumbry of Wellington became the 3rd and 4th players to HIT for the CYCLE!

        • Al Wiggins of Milton ties a record by swiping 4 bases in a game.
        • Jason Thompson of San Diego tied a record by striking out 5 times in a game.
        • Dennis Eckersley of Toronto got pounded for a record 21 hits setting a new record for hits allowed in a game.
        • Floyd Bannister of Sleepytown tossed the 7th 1-hitter in BDSL history and also became the 4th pitcher to face a minimum of 28 batters.
        • Storm Davis of Sleepytown tied a record by retiring 21 straight batters in a game.
        • The Savannah Shoeless Joes tied a record by hitting 8 doubles in a game.
        • The Fuller Furies ties a record with 6 errors in a game.
        • The New York City Commuters ties a record by scoring 12 runs in one inning.
        • Consecutive Game Streaks has now been updated:
          • Gary Maddox of Barnett Shale had 10 consecutive hits which set a new record in April.
          • The Vegas Velvet Knights didn’t allow a homerun for 12 consecutive games setting a record in April.
          • The Savannah Shoeless Joes had an error in 12 consecutive games setting a record in April.
          • Carney Lansford of Philadelphia and Greg Luzinski of Toronto co-hold a record with 3 consecutive homeruns.

 

 

April 1983

 

·         Sleepytown’s Storm Davis came very close to throwing a no-hitter, but Palm Beach’s Rick Miller’s pinch hit single to lead off the 9th left Davis with the 5th 1-hitter in BDSL history instead.

        • Rookie Tony Gwynn of Barnett Shale tied a record with 6 hits in a game (16 inn.).
        • Another rookie, Tony Phillips, of Fuller tied a record with 5 runs in a game.
        • Dale Murphy of Wellington tied a record with 14 total bases.
        • Rick Camp of San Diego tied a record by facing only 28 batters in a game
        • Lamarr Hoyt of New York City tied a record by retiring 21 straight batters in a game.
        • The Palm Beach Elks broke the record and then tied their own record with 6 errors in a game.
        • The Fuller Furies set new record with 9 consecutive hits in a game and then the LaGrange Lone Gunmen tied the record by getting 9 consecutive hits a game against Fuller.
